Brazilian horned frog, or Wieds Frog is a South American Horned Frog, Wieds Frog or Ceratophrys aurita is a species of frog in the Ceratophryidae family.

The Brazilian horned frog or C. aurita is a species of frog in the family Ceratophryidae. It is endemic to Brazil. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marshes, and ponds.

Long considered to be the “Holy Grail” of Horned frog collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, the Brazilian horned frog or Ceratophrys aurita has gained an almost mythological status.

Little is currently known about the Brazilian horned frog or C. aurita. It is reportedly the largest of the Horned frog family and occurs in a wide range of colors and patterns ranging from dark green to light the beige to reddish-brown; with the colors mixed and matched into a seemingly endless combination of color and pattern.

They are found in coastal areas of Brazil from Bahia south to Rio Grande do Sul and inland to the state of Minas Gerais.

As a rain forest dweller, Brazilian horned frog or Ceratophrys aurita spends its time buried in the leaf litter of the forest floor waiting in ambush for its next meal.

C. aurita females are the larger, attaining a body length (and often width) of 8 to 10 inches. They are said by some to reach a length of 12 inches. Males are the smaller being 5 to 7 inches in length.

In keeping with the reputation of these frogs for being biters, the Brazilian horned frog can, will, and does bite. To this habit, as they leap forward, they add a disconcerting bark. In addition to their strong jaws they have teeth.

They are aggressively territorial and voracious to a fault. Some have been found dead in the wild with the remains of an impossible-to-ingest victim still protruding from their mouths. Their ravenous appetite and huge mouths have earned them and other horned frogs the pet-trade nickname “Pac Man frogs.”
