Adapis parisiensis is from a prosimian of Eocene North America and Europe. Resembles the modern tarsiers and galagos.

Adapis parisiensis is an extinct genus of Adapidae primate belonging to the subfamily Adapinae. The genus was named by Cuvier in 1821 and contains up to three species. Males were larger than females.

Thinking that the distorted remains from the Paris region belonged to an extinct genus of pachyderms, Cuvier adopted Adapis, a non-scientific name that was sometimes used for the Hyrax, which was considered related to Adapis parisiensis by Cuvier.

Cuvier’s source for the informal name was Conrad Gesner, Historiae animalium, I (Zurich, 1551). Gesner himself believed that both adapis and the Aramaic word from which he thought it was derived actually referred to the common rabbit.

Adapis parisiensis is considered to be one of the first primates and is the type genus of the Adapidae.‭ ‬These primates have grasping hands that have nails rather than claws and the post cranial skeletons of them are similar to those of lemurs.‭ ‬Adapis parisiensis did not have a nose like some primates‭.

European adapids, especially Adapis parisiensis, have been extensively studied over the past two centuries, essentially for taxonomic and phylogenetic purposes. Analyses of dental, cranial, and postcranial morphology have led to various hypotheses about the diet, locomotion, and lifestyle of this fossil primate species.

As the morphology of Adapis parisiensis is not directly comparable to any extant species, some interpretations are still debated.

The inner ear is crucial to several functional parameters, such as auditory acuity, balance, agility, orientation, and head motion speed during locomotion.
