Very large horns characterize the Ankole-Watusi cattle. Zoo collectors brought some of these animals to Germany in the early twentieth century. The cattle quickly spread from Germany to other European zoos.

Later, handlers imported some of the cattle to the United States. A breeder started a new herd in New York State in 1960. This breeder crossed the imported cattle with an unrelated Canadian bull. Enthusiasts set up a breed society named the Ankole Watusi International Registry in 1983. They also drew up an official breed standard in 1989.

By 2016, the total breed population reached approximately 1,500 head. Owners keep about 80& of these animals in the United States today.
