Permian. Suminia getmanovi. From Russia. Anomodontia is an extinct group of non-mammalian therapsids containing many species from the Permian and Triassic periods, most of which were toothless, possibly endothermic herbivores.

Anomodonts were very diverse during the Middle Permian, including primitive forms like Anomocephalus and Patranomodon and groups like the Venyukovioidea, the Dromasauria, and the Dicynodontia. Of these only the dicynodonts survived beyond the Middle Permian.

Suminia getmanovi is a little genus of anomodont therapsid that lived in Russia during the Permian.‭ ‬Though the mouth was full of sharp and proportionately large teeth,‭ ‬wear patterns upon the teeth themselves indicate that they were being repeatedly used to process plant material,‭ ‬meaning that Suminia was herbivorous.‭ ‬

The holotype specimen of Suminia getmanovi was found in a sandstone sediment,‭ ‬leading to some suggestion that Suminia getmanovi lived around river deltas‭.‭ ‬The structure of the hand of Suminia shows that they were capable of grasping,‭ ‬strongly suggesting that Suminia getmanovi may have in fact been an arboreal creature climbing through trees and larger shrubs to get at food.

Dicynodonts became the most successful and abundant of all herbivores in the Late Permian and Triassic, filling ecological niches ranging from large browsers down to small burrowers. Few dicynodont families survived the Permian to Triassic extinction event, but one lineage evolved into large, stocky forms that remained the dominant terrestrial herbivores right up until the Late Triassic, when changing conditions caused them to decline.
