Brush-tailed possums are native to Australia, Tasmania, and small nearby islands. They eat eucalyptus leaves as a major part of their diet. They also eat other leaves, fruits, and garden vegetables. These inventive forages sometimes raid kitchens and eat small mammals like rats.
Females give birth to one bay after a 17-day gestation period. The young joey spends up to five months growing safely inside the mother’s pouch.
They nest in natural tree hollows. In cities, they use next boxes as hollow tree alternatives. City dwellers see this animal more than any other native mammal because they thrive in human environments.
They feature large, pointed ears. Its bushy prehensile tail grasps branches easily. The tail has a hairless patch on the lower underside. Sharp claws tip their forefeet. The first toe of each hindfoot lacks a dew claw but provides strong grasping abilities.
