Malayan Sun Bear or Helarctos malayanus is the smallest bear in the world, an adult male is about 4 feet tall when standing on its hind legs and can weigh up to 140 pounds. Despite their small size, sun bears can be very dangerous.

Malayan sun bears or Helarctos malayanus are skillful climbers, aided by long sickle-shaped claws on all four feet. These extremely long claws allow the bears to dig for honey and grubs.

The Malayan sun bear or Helarctos malayanus is omnivores. Their diet also includes fruits, insects, small mammals, and birds. Bees, beehives, and honey are important food items of sun bears.

Feeding primarily on termites, ants, beetle larvae, bee larvae and a large variety of fruit species, especially figs. They have been observed eating fruits from the durian species Durio graveolens.

Occasionally, growth shoots of certain palms and some species of flowers are consumed. In the forests of Kalimantan, fruits of Moraceae, Burseraceae and Myrtaceae make up more than 50 percent of the fruit diet.

Malayan Sun bears or or Helarctos malayanus range from the eastern Himalayas to Szechuan in China, then southward throughout Burma, parts of Indochina and the Malayan peninsula.

They have short, wide, flat heads with small round ears. Their fur is rather coarse but appears sleek. This coat is entirely black except for a “U” shaped patch on the chest and a grey to faintly orange muzzle. The yellowish or white chest patch is highly variable, “U” shaped in some and completely absent in others.

The young are born with soft, shiny coats. The paws are fairly large with sickle-shaped claws and naked soles. Malayan Sun bears or Helarctos malayanus have an interesting walk, with all four legs turned in while walking.
