The American Elk or Cervus canadensis is a member of the New World deer subfamily and is the largest and heaviest extant species in the deer family. Most adult male moose have distinctive broad, palmate (open-hand shaped) antlers.

Their fur consist of two layers; top layer of long guard hairs and a soft wooly undercoat. The guard hairs are hollow and filled with air for better insulation, which also helps them stay afloat when swimming.

Both male and female American Elk or Cervus canadensis have a dewlap or bell, which is a fold of skin under the chin. The tail is short and vestigial in appearance.

On average, an adult American Elk stands 4.6 to 6.9 ft. high at the shoulder. Males normally weigh from 838 to 1,543 lb. and females weigh 441 to 1,080 lb. The head and body length is 7.9 to 10.2 ft., with the vestigial tail adding only a further 2.0–4.7 in.

Cervus canadensis lack upper front teeth, but have eight sharp incisors on the lower jaw. They also have a tough tongue, lips and gums, which aid in the eating of woody vegetation. They have six pairs of large, flat molars and, ahead of those, six pairs of premolars, to grind up their food.

American Elk or Cervus canadensis upper lip is very sensitive, to help distinguish between fresh shoots and harder twigs, and is prehensile, for grasping their food.

Cervus canadensis diet consists of both terrestrial and aquatic vegetation. The most common moose predators are the gray wolf along with bears and humans.

American Elk do not form herds and are solitary animals, aside from calves who remain with their mother until the cow begins estrus (typically at 18 months after birth of the calf), at which point the cow chases away young bulls.
