Przewalskis horse, Equus przewalskii or Equus ferus przewalskii, also called the takhi horse, Mongolian wild horse or Dzungarian horse, is a rare and endangered horse originally native to the steppes of Central Asia.

At one time extinct in the wild, it has been reintroduced to its native habitat since the 1990s in Mongolia at the Khustain Nuruu National Park, Takhin Tal Nature Reserve, and Khomiin Tal, as well as several other locales in Central Asia and Eastern Europe.

The taxonomic position is still debated, with some taxonomists treating Przewalski’s horse as a species, E. przewalskii, others as a subspecies of wild horse (E. ferus przewalskii) or a feral variety of the domesticated horse (E. f. caballus). It is named after the Russian geographer and explorer Nikołaj Przewalski.

Most wild horses today, such as the American mustang or the Australian brumby, are actually feral horses descended from domesticated animals that escaped and adapted to life in the wild.

Przewalskis horse or Equus ferus przewalskii has long been considered the only ‘true’ extant wild horse left, never having been domesticated.

However, a 2018 DNA study suggested that modern Przewalskis horses or Equus ferus przewalskii may descend from the domesticated horses of the Botai culture.

Przewalskis horse or Equus ferus przewalskii is stockily built in comparison to domesticated horses, with shorter legs. Typical height is about 12 to 14 hands, and length is about 6 ft 11 in.

It weighs around 660 lb. The coat is generally dun in color with pangaré features, varying from dark brown around the mane, to pale brown on the flanks, and yellowish-white on the belly, as well as around the muzzle.

The legs of Przewalski’s horse or Equus ferus przewalskii are often faintly striped, also typical of primitive markings. The mane stands erect and does not extend as far forward, while the tail is about 35.43 ins. long, with a longer dock and shorter hair than seen in domesticated horses.

The hooves of Przewalskis horse or Equus ferus przewalskii are longer in the front and have significantly thicker sole horns than feral horses. This is beneficial, as it improves the performance of the hooves on their terrain.
