The raccoon lives across North America, stretching from southern Canada down to Panama. Escapes and deliberate introductions also distributed them across the mainland Europe, the Caucasus, and Japan. They occupy deciduous forests, mixed forests, mountainous areas, costal marshes, and urban areas.
These lively, nocturnal omnivores feed on crayfish, crabs, frogs, fish, nuts, seeds, and berries. They also raid campsites, enjoy human and dog or cat food.
They are the largest members of the procyonid family. They have a body length of about 28 inches and weigh about 20 pounds. Their greyish coat consists of dense underfur that insulates them against cold weather.
