Emeroleter levis is an extinct genus of nycteroleterid parareptile known from the early Late Permian of European Russia. It was a long-legged lizard-like small animal with a length about 30 cm. From the collection of Koltelnich Peleontological Museum. In Russia. Polyurethane Cast. 255 Million Years Ago. Upper Permian.

Emeroleter levis was a small, carnivorous, and at times insectivorous parareptilian (early extinct reptile) dating from the Middle to Late Permian period (265-252 mya). They have been found at Kotel’nich on the Vyatka River in western Russia, and also in North America.

The name Emeroleter means “day thief”. It is related to the genus nycteroleter (“night thief”), and several other genera including Macroleter, Bashykroleter, and probably Rhipaeosaurus.

All are grouped into the order Procolophonomorpha and the family Nycteroleterae, the latter named by I.A. Efremov for their large eyes indicating night hunting of insects. The skull length is 5-7 cm and the body length 20-25 cm. They are considered a sister group to pareiasauroids.

The 1930s excavations at Kotel’nich found many examples of Nycteroleter, including two complete skeletons of a juvenile and adult found together in a burrow, now in the Vyatka Museum.
