Each massive foot had three primary, forward-facing toes that touched the ground. Each individual toe ended in a robust, curved claw built for handling intense physical pressure. They also had a small, clawed hallux toe located higher up on the back of the foot.
The core structure featured deep channels along the sides to secure a thick keratin sheath. This horn-like outer nail added extra length, depth, and sharpness to the toes.
The giant meat-eaters relied on these heavy foot spikes to travel across ancient North America. Their flat, broad toe claws functioned exactly like cleats to grip loose forest soil and mud. This traction allowed the nine-ton predators to push forward and to accelerate during short, aggressive sprints.
The sturdy bones safely distributed their massive body weight evenly. The wide, tall base of the foot gave the claws incredible structural strength to withstand intense pressure without snapping.
