North America serves as the native land for this extinct ground sloth. Open grasslands with nearby water sources stretching from western Canada down through the United States and into Central America formed their primary range.
Their heavy-set frames weighed up to 2,400 pounds. Thick brown fur covered their wide chests and short necks. Nickel-sized bony plates called dermal ossicles were underneath their thick skin to provide extra protection from predators. Short snouts, powerful jaws, and inward-turning feet characterized their bulky physical shape.
Grasses, flowering plants, and low shrubs formed the primary diet of these grazing herbivores. High-crowned molar teeth chewed the rough pasture vegetation. Three powerful claws helped them dig for sweet roots or grab food.
