Edmontosaurus had highly specialized hands and feet. For a long time, scientists thought these duck-billed dinosaurs had webbed paddles for swimming. A famous mummified fossil proved this idea wrong. The skin pulls tight around the bones to form a single, solid unit.
The front limbs had four long fingers on each hand. These fingers lacked individual claws. Instead, a large mitten of skin enclosed all the fingers together. This skin mitten formed a single, weight-bearing hoof.
The hoof structure looked like a modern horse or camel foot. This proves the dinosaur spent most of its time walking on all four legs.
The back feet were much larger and heavier than the front hands. Each back foot had only three functional toes. Every toe ended in a broad, blunt, and flat hoof-like nail.
