The giant forest hog originally comes from equatorial Africa, mainly west of the Rift Valley. They live in the Guinean and Congolese forests, forest-grassland mosaics, and wooded savannas up to 12,500 feet.
This large swine mostly eats plant material, foliage, and grass, but they also eat insects, grubs, and carrion. Females give birth to small litters, typically producing 2 to 4 babies at one time.
Taxonomists did not discover this massive swine until the early 1900s. adults stand approximately 39 inches high and stretch about 74 inches long.
These animals have a huge, broad head. Males develop naked, inflated pads of skin near their eyes. These cheek pads contain scent glands, and the hogs also have a preputial scent gland.
Both sexes have small, straight tusks that flare outward up to 11.8 inches. They have teeth that are modified for grazing and browsing. The giant forest hog has large, pointed ears and bristly hair on its body and tail. Their coat displays a slate gray color with some lighter hair on the face. Females grow slightly smaller than males.
Populations remain scattered northeast of Lake Victoria, with larger groups spanning from Nigeria to Senegal. They occur locally in the humid highlands of the Rwenzori Mountains, Mount Keyna, and the Ethiopian Highlands.
This hog remains mostly nocturnal to avoid heat and danger. However, they switch to daylight hours during the cold periods or in regions where humans protect them.
