Striped skunk skull replica measures 3.3 x 1.9 x 1.5 inches. The Mephitis mephitis is a museum-quality polyurethane resin cast of a California Academy of Sciences specimen. 2-part skull (separate cranium and mandible). 1:1 scale. Made in USA.
The striped skunk lives across North America, north of Mexico, throughout Canada, and the United States. They live in fields, open woods, and suburban areas.
These omnivores feed on insects like grasshoppers, beetles, crickets, and caterpillars they also eat mice, voles, eggs, and the chicks of ground-nesting birds. When in season, they eat vegetable matter such as apples, blueberries, black cherries, ground cherries, corn and nightshade. Costal populations feed on crabs and beached fish.
They are stoutly-built, short-limed animals. Their thick body fur has a black base with a white stripe extending from the head along the flanks to the rump and tail. Some have a white patch on their chest.
They have a small, conical head and long, heavily furred tails. These solitary creatures have highly developed, musk-filled scent glands to ward off predators. Each gland contains about 15 milliliters of musk used for protection, which they can spray several meters.
They may dig their own dens, though they will use those abandoned by other animals should the opportunity present itself.
