The Malayan tapir is native to Asia. It is the only tapir species from that content. People refer to the tapir as cipan, tenuk or badak tampung.

These animals are herbivores and forage for tender shoots and leaves from more than 15 plant species.

The tapir has light-colored patch that extends from its shoulders to its rump. The rest of the body hair is black. White rims line the tips of its ears. This distinct pattern is for camouflage. The disrupted coloration makes it difficult to recognize the animal in the forest.

They are solitary creatures. They mark out large tracks of land as their territory. These areas usually overlap with the territories of other individuals. Tapirs mark these spaces by spraying urine on plants.

World Tapir Day - April 27

World Tapir Day takes place annually on April 27 to raise awareness about these critically endangered species and to advocate for their protection for future generations. These creatures are directly related to horses as well as rhinoceroses in terms of genetics. Neither the tapir nor this eclectic ancestry is new to the world; both are centuries old. Researchers believe that these animals have remained essentially the same for millions of years.
