The black colobus originally comes from a small area of western central Africa. They predominately feed on seeds, but they also eat large amounts of leaves, lianas, flowers, buds, and unripe fruits. Females give birth to a single baby after a gestation period of several months.

People know this Old Word monkey as the satanic black colobus. Black colobuses are large and completely covered with black fur. Like all other colobus monkeys, they do not have thumbs. The species has faced large declines in population due to habitat destruction and hunting by humans.

The black colobus monkey has a head-body length of 19 to 27 inches and a long tail of about 30 inches. As in all colobus species, the black colobus has a slender build and tough pads of skin on the rump. Adult males weigh between 22 to 33 pounds, whilst females weigh between 22 to 24 pounds.

They are covered in black fur apart from the ears and face. It has longer hair on its cheeks and forehead. They do not have any white markings.

They are an arboreal that lives high in the canopy of dense rainforests. They occasionally inhabit coastal sand dunes or wooded meadows. They are not able survive in secondary forests that have grown after major disturbances like logging. Therefore, they tend to avoid areas populated by humans.

Their robust flat teeth allow them to crew through tough seeds easily. This diet means that the species plays an important role as a seed dispersers in the ecosystem.
