The caribou is also known as reindeer. Caribou lives in cold northern regions across the globe. Their native range covers the Arctic, sub-Arctic, and high mountain areas. You can find them in northern Europe, Siberia, and North America. They thrive in freezing tundra and thick boreal forests.

These large deer eat reindeer lichen during the cold winter months. They use their strong hooves to dig through deep snow for this food. In the summer, they eat fresh green leaves, grasses, and mushrooms. Their bodies change food into energy very quickly.

Females give birth to a calf each spring. Twins are extremely rare for this species. The mothers nurture their babies in safe, hidden spaces away from predators. The young calves walk and follow the herd within a few hours.

Both male and female caribou grow large antlers every year. The males always grow much larger antlers than the females. They have thick fur with a dense undercoat to survive the freezing air.

Their hollow outer hairs trap body heat perfectly. Large hooves help them walk across deep winter snow and wet summer swamps. Their sponge-like footpads tighten up in winter to cut into slippery ice. The nose bones warm the cold air before it reaches their lungs.
