Aegyptopithecus zeuxis lived in lush forests of Egypt about 30 million years ago. This “Dawn Ape” climbed trees on all fours and acted as a bridge between early primates and modern apes. This primate belongs to the Propliopithecidae and represents a primate catarrhine. It lived long before the evolutionary split between Old World monkeys and the great apes.
This specimen inhabited the Jebel Qatrani Formation and possessed a dental formula of 2:1:2:3. Elwyn Simons discovered the first fossil skull within the Fayum Depression.
