The African palm civet is a small mammal also known as the two-spotted palm civet. This species ranges throughout much of the sub-Saharan Africa from Guinea to South Sudan. It also lives south into Angola and eastern Zimbabwe.
This animal has short legs, small ears, a cat-like body, and a long lithe tail. They have dense, woolly fur coats that protect it from the weather. Its fur varies from greyish-brown to bright reddish-yellow. They have dark brown and black spots on the lower back of their body. They also have bright gold-yellow eyes with pupils that narrow to thin slits in the sunlight.
Most communication happens through scent marking and vocal sounds. These creatures have many scents. The main gland on the lower abdomen secrets a large amount of brown musk. Other glands on the chin and feet produce a floral or fruity smell. Another gland sits on the belly of the lactating mother. This fluid stains the young a bright yellow color for unknown reasons.
These felines make many different sounds. They are famous for unique hooting calls. They make loud mewing and clucking sounds to talk to each other. They can also purr, growl, scream or bark when threatened.
