The black-backed jackal is a canid native to two areas of Africa. Fossil deposits in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa show it has lived there for 2 to 3 million years. Specimens from fossils in Transvaal are almost identical to modern jackals. The ancient fossils have slightly different nasal bones.
The black-backed jackal, or Lupellella mesomelas, is a fox-like canid. It has a slender body, long legs, and large ears. It is similar to the side-striped jackal. It is more distantly related to the golden jackal. Its skull and teeth are more robust, and its incisors are much sharper.
The animal weighs 13 to 29 pounds. It stands 15 to 19 inches at the shoulder. It measures 26.5 to 32.0 inches in body length. Its base color is reddish brown to tan on the flanks and legs. A black saddle mixed with silvery hair extends from the shoulders to the tail.
