American black bears have five toes on each foot and walk flat-footed like humans. Their paws have short, curved, non-retractable claws, measuring up to 5.3 inches long and 5.6 inches wide. These powerful, sharp claws are ideal for climbing trees and foraging for food, while the inner toe often stays off the ground.
The wide palm adds amazing stability when the bear moves. A small heel pad sits below the main palm pad and the front foot. This structure gives the front limbs amazing dexterity.
The front claws have a sharper curve than the hind claws. These thick claws taper down from a wide base. The outter toe is the largest digit on the front paw. Thick skin protects the sole from sharp twigs and rough rocks.
