The black-footed cat is the smallest African cat. It lives only in the dry southwestern areas of Southern Africa. The IUCN Red List has classified it as Vulnerable. Its population falls due to poaching, traffic accidents, and attacks by domestic dogs.
Despite its name, only the pads on its feet are truly black. The animal has a stocky build, large eyes, and rounded ears. Its fur ranges from cinnamon-butt to deep tawny. Black or brown spots merge to form rings on its legs, neck, and tail. These distinct patterns help the cat hide from enemies in dry grass.
These tiny feline hunts small birds and rodents. It is a very active hunter and kills up to 14 small animals in one night. It hunts mainly by stalking rather than waiting in ambush. The cat moves under the over of darkness to sneak close to its prey before it pounces.
It travels fast through weeds to flush out prey. Less often, it sits completely still outside rodent burrows with its eyes closed. It listens closely for any slight sound. This feline sometimes hides food to eat later instead of devouring it all at once
