Crinoids come from oceans all over the world. They occupy a huge geographic range, living in every single saltwater sea from the warm equator to the icy poles. They thrive across all depths, inhabiting both shallow tropical coral reefs and dark ocean trenches up to 9,000 meters deep.

Crinoids are small sea animals that belong to the same group as starfish and sea urchins. Some live stuck on the ocean floor on a stem. Some do not have a stem, and they swim freely as feather stars.

These animals eat tiny, microscopic organisms like plankton, algae, and floating waste particles. They cannot create water currents to pull food in, so they rely entirely on passing ocean currents.
