Dasplateosaurus means “frightful lizard”. This tyrannosaurid dinosaur lived in western North America. It roamed the earth 74 to 77 million years ago. This was during the Late Cretaceous Period.
The genus contains two known species. Fossils of the fist species, D. torosus, come from Alberta, Canada. Scientists found the second species, D. horneri, only in Montana. A possible third species from Alberta needs formal identification.
This dinosaur is closely related to the much larger Tyrannosaurus rex. Daspletosaurus was a heavy, two-legged predator. It weighed several tons and had dozens of large sharp teeth. It had the small front arms typical of its family. However, its arms were longer than those of other similar dinosaurs.
