Fossils of the extinct mammal come from the northern Pacific Rim and from Baja California Peninsula along the coast of California. The Fossils found in Oregon, Washington, Sakhalin Island, Hokkaido, and south to the Shimane Prefecture were in pristine condition. These ancient creatures lived from the Late Oligocene subepouch through the Late Miocene subepoch.
Desmostylus was a large, hippopotamus-like creature. The adult measured 9.02 feet in length and had a body mass of 2,829 pounds. The animal had a short tail and powerful legs with hooves. The long jaws of Desmostylus supported forward-facing tusks, made of long canine and front teeth.
Desmostylus lived in freshwater. It also spent a large amount of time in these places. They foraged for aquatic freshwater plants.
