The dwarf mammoth, also known as the Channel Islands mammoth is an extinct dwarf elephant. It descended from the massive Columbian mammoth of mainland North America.

This animal became extinct during the Quaternary extinction event. Changing environmental conditions wiped out many large creatures because they could not adapt.

This species is a famous example of island dwarfism. On average, these animals stood 5.6 feet tall at the shoulders and weighed around 1.680 pounds. 2f California since 1856.

They first appeared in scientific writings in 1873. In 1994, the National Park Service called in experts to inspect an uncovered skeleton on Santa Rosa Island.

Workers dug up the bones and recovered 90 percent of a mature male skeleton. The animal was about 50 years old when it died. The small bones rested in their natural life positions.

This proved that the creature died right where it was found rather than being scattered. The bones now stay at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

This discovery marked the first nearly complete specimen ever found for this species. The skeleton was only missing a foot, a tusk, and a few vertebrae.

A shifting sand dune quickly covered the remains after death. This protected the bones from weather and scavengers. Following this event, workers searched the island and found 160 new locations containing dwarf mammoth bones. Most of these sites sit on Santa Rosa Island.
