The Eastern mole is a medium-sized mammal. This overall grey North American moles has large, hairless, spade-shaped forefeet.

This species is native to Canada, Mexico, and the eastern United States. It has the widest range of any North American mole. They prefer loamy soils found in woods, fields, and meadows.

The mole builds both deep and shallow burrows. These burrows have discarded excess soil collected in molehills. Leaves and grasses form their nests. Its two to five young leave the nest at about four weeks.

Its diet consists of earthworms, grubs and underground insects. Dogs, cats, foxes and coyotes’ prey upon moles.

The Eastern mole is a small, sturdy animal that lives underground. Its body has a somewhat cylindrical shape with an elongated head. The eyes are completely fused; therefore its sight is limited to distinguishing light and dark.
