This tetrapod had a massive rib cage and a short tail to support its weight. Their heavy feet helped them crawl through ancient swamps to find food.

Description

Eryops megacephalus skull replica measures 13.0 x 11.0 x 2.0 inches. The Eryops skull is museum-quality polyurethane resin cast. 2-part skull (separate cranium & mandible). 1:1 scale. Made in USA.

Eryops lived as a semi-aquatic prediator roughly 295 million years ago. This giant averaged about five to six feet in length and weighed nearly 200 pounds. Specifically, it ranks as one of the largest creatures of the Early Permian period.

Scientists excavated most fossils from the Texas Red Beds, though they also found bones in New Mexico. In addition,  this temnospondyl had a broad, flat head that reached two feet in length. It possessed an enormous mouth filed with many curved teeth.

The skeleton also showed a heavy build with thick limbs and strong joints. While researchers identified several complete skeletons, most fossils consisted of skull pieces from Oklahoma and Utah.
