The Eurasian lynx is a medium-sized wild cat. It lives in Europe, Central Asia, Siberia, and the Himalayas.
The lynx has a short, reddish or brown coat in summer. Southern populations usually have brighter coat colors. In winter, a thick coat of silky fur replaces the summer coat. This winter fur varies from silver-grey to greyish brown. The neck, chin and belly stay white all year. Black spots usually mark the fur. Some cats have dark brown stripes on their foreheads and backs.
Long, powerful legs help the lynx move quickly. Large, furred paws act like snowshoes in deep winter snow. The cat has a short tail with a solid black tip. A long grey and white ruff frames its face.
They are the largest of all four lynx species. It ranges from 31 to 51 inches long. It stands 24 to 30 inches tall at the shoulder and the short tail is 4.3 to 9.6 inches long. Males weigh about 46 pounds on average. Females weigh less, averaging around 40 pounds.
