Specifically, the genera Acerodon and Pteropus are known as flying foxes. They represent the only members of the superfamily Pteropodoidea. While scientists first proposed three subfamilies in 1917, they now recognize six distinct subfamilies. As of 2018, researchers had described 197 species of megabat.
