Giant Oreodon ( Promerychoerus sp. ). Though pig-like in appearance, several experts believe that oreodonts may be most closely allied with camels, due to the similar structure of their teeth.
Promerychoerus lived in Wyoming during the Miocene epoch, approximately 20 million years ago.
The 1 m (3 ft 4 in) long creature is thought to have been amphibious, as all species possessed an elongated, barrel-shaped body and short limbs that are typical adaptations found in semi-aquatic mammals. P. superbus had a long tapir-like face.
They had a short neck, elongate body, short limbs and feet and besides size varied among their genera primarily in teeth and the shape of skull. Although some of the Oreodont species had as many as five toes, they bore their weight primarily on two of their hoofed-toes.
Their name means “mountain teeth,” a testament to the ridge structures of their molars. These flattened teeth indicate a browser’s diet, the Oreodont searching through grassy prairies and wooded areas for roots, shoots, and other plant matter to grind up.
Oreodont fossils are especially common in the Brule Formation of the White River Badlands of South Dakota, U.S. This formation is composed of river deposits and paleosols (soils buried under sedimentary rock) that developed in savanna-like environments about 34 million years ago.
Oreodont extinction was a complex process, as are most extinctions, and is likely best explained by a combination of an overall reduction in forage, increased seasonality associated with reduction of winter resources, and competition with true-ruminants.
