The long-nosed bandicoot lives along the eastern coat of Australia from Cape York Peninsula in Queensland down to New South Wales and Victoria. They inhabit rainforests, moist gullies, and grassy woodlands. They also benefit from urban lawns and open grassy areas that sit near sheltered undergrowth.
These nocturnal omnivores forage for insects, spiders, caterpillars, roots, leaves, seeds, and fungi. They spend much of their time digging and often leave holes in the soil. During the winter months, they pivot their diet towards larvae, grass and wattle leaves. They also frequently visit compost heaps to find food.
Females give birth to a litter of one to five young after a 12-day gestation period. This rapid cycle gives them one of the shortest pregnancy times of any animal.
They reach a body length of about 16 inches and have sandy or grey-brown fur. They have a very prominent long nose, small pointed upright ears, a short tail, and a hunched posture. Their front feet have three long, clawed toes to help them dig.
Mothers protect their developing young by using their rear-facing pouch. This prevents dirt from going inside while she digs deep holes in the ground. The animals remain solitary and emit a high-pitched squeak whenever danger or a predator disturbs them.
