Description
Magellanic penguin skull replica measures 5.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 inches. Spheniscus magellanicus skull is a museum-quality polyurethane resin cast of a California Academy of Sciences specimen. 2-part skull (separate cranium and mandible). 1:1 scale. Made in USA.
Magellanic penguins breed along the coastal shores of South America, including Argentina, Cilie, and the Falkland Islands. During migration, some travel north to Brazil and occasionally reach Espirito Santo.
These medium-sized penguins reach heights of 24 to 50 inches and weigh between 6.0 and 14.3 pounds.
Males outgrow females, though both parents lose weight while they raise their young.
Adults have black backs and white bellies. Two black bands stretch between the head and the breast, and the lower band forms an inverted horseshoe shape.
A broad white border frames the blank head, running from behind the eye, around the black ear and chin, before joining at the throat.
They hunt in the open ocean, dive deep underwater, and swallow their prey whole. They consume anchovies, sardines, sprats, hake, silversides, squid, cuttlefish, jellyfish, krill, squat lobsters, small crabs and other gelatinous sea creatures.
