These animals are herbivores and forage for tender shoots and leaves from more than 15 plant species.
The tapir has light-colored patch that extends from its shoulders to its rump. The rest of the body hair is black. However, white rims line the tips of its ears. This distinct pattern is for camouflage. The disrupted coloration makes it difficult to recognize the animal in the forest.
They are primarily solitary creatures. They mark out large tracks of land as their territory. These areas usually overlap with the territories of other individuals. Tapirs mark these spaces by spraying urine on plants. They often follow paths that they have bulldozed through the undergrowth. They move slowly through the forest and pause to eat often. They also note the scents left behind by other tapirs.
