The mountain lion is a large felid of the subfamily Felinae. It is native to the Americas. Its range spans from the Canadian Yukon to the southern Andes in South America, and is the widest of any large wild terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere.
Mountain lions use their sharp, retractable claws to survive in the wild. They have five claws on their front paws and four on their back paws. One front claw acts as a special dewclaw. The front claws are much larger than the back ones. This size difference helps the cats grip heavy prey like deer.
