Description
North American river otter skull replica measures 4.5 x 2.9 x 1.9 inches. The Lontra canadensis is a museum-quality polyurethane resin cast of a California Academy of Sciences specimen. 2-part skull (separate cranium and mandible). 1:1 scale. Made in USA.
The North American river otter is native to North America. They live in coastal areas, lakes, and rivers across Canada and the United States.
Fish are the primary diet of their choosing. They also hunt crabs, frogs, crayfish, and small birds. They use their long, thick whiskers to easily find prey in dark waters.
Females give birth to a single litter each year in the spring. They have between one and three babies, which are called pups. The mother raises the young inside a secure riverbank den.
Their body length ranges from 24 to 42 inches. About one third of their total length includes a long, tapered tail. Tail lengths range from 12 to 20 inches.
An average adult male weighs about 25 pounds and the average female weights about 18 pounds.
Their fur is short and has a high luster that varies from light brown to black. The throat, chin and lips appear grayer than the rest of the body. Their flat head features small, dark brown eyes and round ears.
Their nostrils and ears close completely when they go underwater. This keeps water from entering their lungs when they dive.
