The payara wolf fish features vibrant silver scales, sharp spiked teeth and two long fangs. These elongated fangs rise directly from the lower jaw to impale prey. The lower teeth grow from four to six inches long. They are so massive that the fish is born with matching holes in its upper jaw to house them.
A streamlined build gives the body extreme power and speed. Fan-shaped caudal fins help the fish swim through choppy currents and rapid waters. Bony facial plates neatly conceal their large gills. This ferocious predator typically reaches a stand length of about 1.0 foot.
