Bonobos are native to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in central Africa. Their geographic range is restricted entirely to the humid rainforests south of the Congo River. Historically, people also call this great ape the pygmy chimpanzee, the dwarf chimpanzee, or the gracile chimpanzee.
This primate has a highly distinct look. They have a dark face with pink lips, small ears, wide nostrils, and less prominent brow ridges than common chimpanzees. The long black hair on their head splits naturally down the center naturally to form a distinct parting. They sport a slim upper body with narrow shoulders, a thin neck, and remarkably long legs. Adult females are slightly smaller than males.
Their diet consists primarily of plant life, but they are omnivorous. They eat fruits, leaves, seeds, and stems. They supplement their meal with insects, earthworms, honey, eggs, and occasionally small mammals or fish.
Female bonobos give birth to just one baby at a time. Their gestation lasts between 220 and 230 days. Mothers take care of their highly dependent offspring for several years. Because of this intense care, they wait about five years between births.
