The largest species within the genus Vulpes vulpes, the red fox has a native range spanning most of North America and Eurasia. Carnivore of the deep forest the artic tundra, prairies, and farmlands. Eurasia, North Africa and North America.
Apart from its large size, it is distinguished from other fox species by its ability to adapt quickly to new environments.
Red foxes have five claws on their front paws and four on their back paws. Unlike gray foxes, red foxes cannot retract their claws into their paws. Their font paws feature a tiny extra digit called a dewclaw. This dewclaw sits high on the back of the leg and never hits the ground during normal walking.
The animals actively use their narrow claws to dig deep dens into soft soil. Their sharp claw tips also help them grab small rodents like mice during a hunt. Thick, dense fur completely covers the bottom footpads of their feet. This soft fur keeps their paws warm during freezing winters. It also muffles the sound of their footsteps to help them sneak up on prey.
A red fox leaves a very distinct oval print in soft mud or fresh snow. Each small claw leaves a clear mark directly in front of the slender toe pads. The heel pad forms a unique chevron shape across the bottom of the track. This print layout allows trackers to tell fox signs apart from larger coyote footprints.
