The Smilodon fatalis belongs to an extinct group of cats. It is a famous prehistoric mammal. Most people call it the saber-toothed cat. They also call it the saber-toothed tiger, however it was not a tiger. It was not closely related to modern cats.

The Smilodon lived in the Americas during the Pleistocene epoch. It ruled as a large meat-eating cat in North America.

This cat grew around the size of modern lions. It had a more robust body and a short lower back. It had high shoulder blades and a short tail. It also had thick legs with short feet.

This cat is famous for its long, thin canine teeth. They had fine ridges on the front and back sides and tilted forward. A gap separated the front teeth and the back teeth on the lower jaw. The lower front teeth were wide and curved backwards and sat in a straight line across the jaw.
