The serval is a slender, medium-sized wild cat. It stands 21 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder. It weighs between 18 and 40 pounds. Females tend to weigh less than males. The head-to-body length ranges from 26 to 39 inches. Key features include a small head, massive ears, and a black-tipped tail.
This animal has the long legs of any cat relative to its body size. Long foot bs and highly mobile toes give it a massive advantage. Its coat is a golden-yellow color. Extensive black spots and stripes cover the entire body.
Three to four dark stripes run from the head to the shoulders. They then break into rows of spots. A soft white fur covers its underbelly. Its eyes are brownish or greenish.
The large ears sit closely together on top of its head. They can rotate up to 180 degrees independently of each other. This cat an incredible sense of hearing and vision. The serval looks similar to the caracal but has a rounder skull and lacks long ear tufts.
The serval hunts mice, rats, frogs, lizards and small birds. It stalks quietly through tall marsh grasses to locate its target. The cat uses its huge ears to listen for moving rodents underground. Once it pinpoints the sound, it leaps high into the air and pounces down hard with its front paws to trap the animal.
