The slender-tailed cloud rat, Southern Luzon giant cloud rat, cloud runner rat is native to the forest of the Philippines. It occurs in at least 12 provinces. The rodent prefers forest and scrub but also occurs in degraded habitats such as plantations. Its range extends from sea level to an altitude of about 7,200 feet.
These animals belong to a group of arboreal and folivorous nocturnal rodents. They are a very large rodent weighing 4.2 to 5.7 pounds.
The color of its long fur, which also covers the tail, is highly variable. Usually, the fur is mostly very pale brown or white with some dark brown or black patches. They often have a black mask and collar but can also be entirely white.
The slender-tailed cloud rats are slow-moving herbivores. Large birds such as the Philippine eagle prey upon them. People in the Philippines hunt them for their meat, driving the rodents near extinction.
They feed on leaves, young shoots, and fruits. They spend their nights foraging high up in the tropical canopy.
The female rat gives birth to one single pup per litter. They maintain a very slow reproductive rate compared to smaller rodents.
