Steller Sea Lion Male Skull

$530.00

Steller sea lions are sexually dimorphic in size, their hearing differs in sensitivity, possibly due to differences in size of the hearing structures. Females have a higher sensitivity than males, perhaps to hear the higher frequency calls of their pups.

Description

Steller Sea Lion Male Skull Replica measures 14.5 inches. Eumetopias jubatus male skull is museum quality polyurethane cast. 2-part skull (separate cranium and jaw). Made in USA.

The Steller sea lion or Eumetopias jubatus, also known as the Steller’s sea lion and Northern Sea Lion, is a near-threatened species of sea lion in the northern Pacific. It is the sole member of the genus Eumetopias and the largest of the eared seals. Among pinnipeds, it is inferior in size only to the walrus and the two species of elephant seals.

The species is named for the naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller, who first described them in 1741. The Steller sea lion has attracted considerable attention in recent decades, owing to significant and largely unexplained declines in their numbers over an extensive portion of their northern range in Alaska.

Adult Steller Sea Lion are lighter in color than most sea lions, ranging from pale yellow to tawny and occasionally reddish. Steller sea lion pups are born almost black, weighing around 51 lbs., and remain dark in coloration for several months. Females and males both grow rapidly until the fifth year, after which female growth slows considerably.

Adult Steller Sea Lion females measure 7.5–9.5 ft. in length, and weigh 530–770 lb. Males have much wider chests, necks, and general forebody structure. Males can weigh between 990–2470 lb. Steller Sea Lion males are further distinguished from females by broader and higher foreheads, flatter snouts, and a thick mane of coarse hair around their large necks.

The Steller Sea Lions are skilled and opportunistic marine predators, feeding on a wide range of fish and cephalopod species. Important diet components include walleye pollock, Atka mackerel, halibut, herring, capelin, flatfish, Pacific cod, rockfish, sculpins, salmon, sand lance, and cephalopods such as various squid and octopus.

International Sea Lion Day - May 30th

World Sea Lion Day is celebrated on May 30th. Together with fur seals, sea lions belong to the family Otariidae, characterized by external ear flaps. They are principally found in large colonies on rocky and sandy shores in Pacific waters. The largest kind is the Steller's sea lion, which can weigh up to 1,000 kg! As they rely on water to feed and cool off, sea lions are vulnerable to the effects of climate change and ocean currents, affecting prey abundance. Besides, they are also victims of bycatch in fisheries. As a result, three species are considered endangered: the Australian sea lion, Galápagos sea lion, and New Zealand sea lion.
