Description

Stenonychosaurus translates to “narrow claw lizard”. This dinosaur had sickle-shaped claws on its feet. The bones grew thin and narrow compared to other raptor claws. A thick horn-like shell made of keratin covered each core bone structure when the animal lived.

The dinosaurs had very long, slender hind limbs to run quickly away from predators. They grew a large claw on the second toe of each hind foot. They actively kept these sharp toe hooks raised off the ground while sprinting. This behavior kept the tips from dulling against rocks. They lowered the claw to trap small animals.

The small meat-eaters also had very long and thin three-fingered hands. Their finger bones could grasp and hold moving prey tightly. Scientists found these claws inside the Dinosaur Park Formation in Alberta, Canada. They lived during the late Cretaceous period alongside massive duck-billed dinosaurs.
