The woolly mammoth is an extinct species that lived during the Pleistocene epoch. It was one of the last in a line of mammoth species. This lineage began with Mammuthus subplanifrons in the early Pliocene. The woolly mammoth diverged from the steppe mammoth about 400,000 years ago in East Asia. Its closest living relative is the Asian elephant.
This prehistoric animal was roughly the same size as modern African elephants. Its ears and tail were short to minimize frostbite and heat loss. It had log, curved tusks and four molars. The animal replaced these teeth six times during its lifetime. Its behavior was similar to that of modern elephants. It used its tusk sand trunk for moving objects, fighting and foraging.
The appearance and behavior of this species are among the best studied of any prehistoric animal. This is due to the discovery of frozen carcasses in Siberia and Alaska. Scientists have also found skeletons, teeth, stomach contents, and dung. Prehistoric cave paintings also show depictions from life. People in Asia knew about these remains long before Europeans discovered them in the 17th century.
