South America served as the native land for this giant extinct mammal. Open fields stretching across Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chilie, and Peru formed their ancient range. Wide temperate grass environments provided the main living areas for these animals.

Thick, long reddish fur covered their wide bodies. Small bone armor plates sat deep inside their thick skin to give extra protection. Narrow, elongated heads featured long blunted snouts and large peg-like teeth.

Their remains have been found in the Yupoi and Uspara Formations of Argentina, the Ulloma, Umala, Nuapua and Tarija Formations of Boliva, in Brazil, Chilie and Peru.

Grasses formed the primary food for these large grazing mammals. Broad flat fields offered plenty of green plants for their daily meals. Low plants gave them food as well.
