The African crested porcupine originates across more than 30 nations in North and sub-Saharan Africa. Wild populations also thrive throughout mainland Italy and across the Mediterranean island of Sicily.

The African crested porcupine stands as the largest porcupine species on earth. These large rodents weigh anywhere from 29 to 60 pounds.

They have coarse, dark brown or black bristles that cover almost the entire body. Long, moveable quills run along the head, nape, and back to form a distinct crest. Sturdier, loosely attached quills measuring 14 inches run along the sides and back.

These large rodents are primarily herbivores that travel up to nine miles a night to forage. They eat plant roots, bulbs, tree bark, fallen fruits, berries and tubers. They routinely raid agricultural fields.

Monogamous pairs form long-term bonds and produce one litter of young each year. The litter usually yields one to two babies. The well-developed young emerge underground with open eyes inside grass-lined chambers of the family burrow.
