The North American porcupine lives in North America and upper Mexico forests and urban areas.
The North American porcupine is an herbivore. It eats leaves, herbs, twigs, and green plants such as clover. In the winter, it may eat bark. It often climbs trees to find food.
Its stout, slow, lumbering form and is spiny coat distinguish the North American porcupine. Their dark brown to black coat has dorsal guard hairs and spines that contain yellow bands. Spines called quills extend from their head to the tail.
A black line marks the middle of the tail and lower back. White fringes the quills on the black area. Because porcupines are nocturnal, the white on black markings stand out. These marks alert their color blind nocturnal predators of the danger they present.
The North American porcupines are the only native North American mammal with antibiotics in its skin. Antibiotics prevent infection when a porcupine falls out of a tree.
They have a very strong pungent odor which can increase when agitated. When threatened, and adult porcupine can bristle its quills, this action displays a white stripe down its back. The animal also uses its teeth to make a warning, cracking sound. They swing their tail or back into the enemy to push the needles into the predator’s flesh.
