Description
Arctictis binturong skull replica measures 5.7 x 3.4 x 2.6 inches, museum-quality polyurethane resin cast of a California Academy of Sciences specimen. 2-part skull (separate cranium and mandible). 1:1 scale. Made in USA.
Arctictis bingurong, also known as the bearcat, is native to South and Southeast Asia. They live in forest throughout the foothills that provide protective cover from the weather and predators.
These large animals feed mostly on fruits such as those of the stranger fig tree. They are excellent hunters and their prey consists of many small animals and insects, birds, fish, and rodents. As opportunistic hunters, they will also eat carrion, eggs, tree shoos and leaves.
Females give birth to a litter of one to three young. These newborns are called binlets. They can live up to 18 years in the wild and over 25 years in captivity.
Their thick body fur is long, coarse, and black. The fur is slightly lighter on their faces with white whiskers. They have small round ears with long protruding ear tufts and small, reddish-brown eyes.
On land, they are uncommon in much of their range. They are listed as vulnerable because of a declining population trend due to severe habitat destruction, agricultural expansion, illegal wildlife trade, poaching, and hunting for human consumption.
